FALL

October through November

This is a fast, but fabulous season! There’s very little time for growth, so we can use nearly full-grown plants to create instantly mature container gardens.

FALL TIPS

There are two ways to go after this season. One is the long-lasting route: install a mix of evergreens that may last in your planter up to two years with proper care. Imagine a boxwood centerpiece surrounded by perennial Heuchera, ferns, grasses, and ivy. Violas and Pansies are a great source of cold tolerant Fall color, and will often rebloom the following Spring.

The other approach is to embrace the colors of the season and go after your containers with reckless abandon, combining late Summer annuals with ornamental cabbages, grasses, and pansies. The more tender plants will be nipped by the first hard frost, but these are the most majestic masterpieces and my favorite way to plant Fall containers.
