Winter Wreath Roundup

The holidays are coming!

Halloween is behind us, the temperatures and humidity have finally dropped, and I’m gearing up to decorate our home for Christmas. My launching point for our holiday decor is usually the wreath on our front door, so I’m sharing a few designers and sources that are inspiring me right now. Much like my container gardens, my front door wreath is different every year, depending on my mood. My kids never know what I’ll come up with!

Before I launch into my favorites, can we talk about wreath size? I always preach the merits of using proper scale to select planters and plants to frame a doorway. The same holds true here. A wreath that's too small will look lost on a door, and a wreath that's too large will look heavy and crowded. Choosing a wreath that's in proportion to your door will make ALL the difference in creating a balanced look.

Whether your style is glitzy, chunky, natural, streamlined, fresh, faux, or all of the above, here are some incredible designs to inspire your door decor this season. Note: I may receive a commission on some products purchased through these links.

#1 HARVEST vibe

This style is perfect for transitioning from Thanksgiving to Christmas and creates a warm welcome. Touches of burnt orange, sage green, gold, burgundy, and red remind us of an abundant harvest feast. Go wild with layers of natural texture, or keep it simple and clean with bleached cones and a plaid bow.

#2 FORAGED style

By “foraged”, I don’t mean amateur, random, picked-some-stuff-in-the-woods. But I DO mean fresh…with airy branches and a mix of natural textures. A touch of velvet ribbon, eucalyptus, or even cotton can elevate the look to become both polished AND natural.

To achieve this foraged look, try one of the faux wreaths below as your base, but add your own touches of ribbon, berries, cotton, and cones.

#3 BOWS GALORE

You’ll almost always find a bow of sorts on any of my wreaths — whether they’re for my clients or my home. Here are a few of my favorite creations from the past, plus a flocked cone wreath from Serena & Lily with a beautiful blue velvet bow — the perfect “coastal grandmother” touch for the holidays.

#4 A TOUCH OF GLAM

If you aren’t into the natural, woodsy look, maybe you’ll like a little sparkle and shine to catch the sun by day and twinkling lights at night. Try a wreath decked in shiny ornaments, baubles, and beads...or vintage Barbie dolls!

#5 MAGNOLIA, MAGNOLIA, MAGNOLIA

The glossy green tops and velvety green undersides make magnolia leaves a southern staple for winter wreaths (and container gardens!). Live wreaths usually dry out after about a month and can be enjoyed in that state or spray painted for an entirely new, long-lasting look. It’s hard to beat the natural beauty of live magnolia, but there are some pretty appealing faux options available, like the two below.

I have a stunning 28” Magnolia wreath from Weston Farms that I used earlier this Fall. I can’t wait to spray it with a metallic champagne paint and add a loose black velvet bow. More to come on that project!

I wish you all a lovely Thanksgiving season!
